Tuesday 3rd October
Today we had an excellent breakfast in a cafe just along from where we are staying and then headed over to Morro Rock where we watched lots of otters and seabirds, as well as a few hardy surfers.

Otters in Morro Bay
It was quite cool and the mist was down over the hills but it soon started to clear as we made our way along Highway 1 as far as we could get. The road is still blocked by a major landslip last year so we only managed 5 miles past Ragged Point. Even so the scenery was lovely and we also stopped to see lots of Elephant Seals that are protected and inhabit about six miles of coastal bays here.

As we walked around viewing the Rookery (the collective noun for seals) we saw a foot long brown snake on the path which soon slithered away. The volunteer ranger we spoke to told us it was a Gopher snake and quite harmless.
